AUTHORITY

History is the story
Of authority,
Masks worn by
Interpreters
Of the natural
Order It all started
With the sun and the moon

And the stars
And the trees, rivers
And mountains.
We revered the bear,
The snake, the elk and bison,
And the golden calf.

We named the gods
And goddesses
For the harvest, the hearth,
War and beauty,
For so many subtle
Forces moving
Around and within us.

We finally believed
In a singularity,
One manifestation of our
Consciousness
And unconsciousness.
It is the institution
Of kingship, the power
Of life and death,

The sovereign last word,
That humanized the
Personality/nationality/universality
Nexus into a body of
Rules.

Science comes with
A disappointment in
The work of myth and magic
To make machines
To make cities, and
It becomes the arbiter
Of what’s real.
Until Einstein

The line was clear between
Opposites.
We knew how to
Measure. But
Finding relationships
As the only surety
The great center of dominion fell apart.

And now without the gun
To force a truth
We teeter on the brink
Of a new singularity,
A thousand places
Woven together by accident.
